Google Defends The New Pixel Electronic Stabilizer and Confirms That It Will Work with 4 K Videos

The Pixel of Google already have a week of life and, although they have still not reached stores, are giving much to talk about, especially by their prices, but also by his camera. The truth is that the Mountain View they have greatly improved photographic capacity their new phones and, in the absence of proof of first-hand, the published evidence is excellent results.

But although the camera has been one of the highlights, there have also been space for criticism, as for example the choice of an electronic stabilizer (E.I.S.) instead of one optical (OIS). Google has defended this decision and has also offered more details about its performance during the recording of videos.

The Pixel does not have optical stabilizer, but Google says that nothing happens

Our mobile cameras have improved significantly in recent years and the optical stabilizer (also known by its acronym OIS) has become an almost indispensable part, so their absence in the new Google Pixel was not very well received.

Instead, Google includes an electronic stabilizer or EIS, a system that takes care of minimize the shaking of the camera by means of a digital algorithm, in other words, that the changes are virtual. On the other hand, a system OIS stabilizes the image using hardware, or what is the same, the camera module is physically moved.

Most brands integrates optical stabilization systems and some combine it with an electronic stabilizer, but in general tends to give priority to the OIS. For this reason some users as which turned to Google through their forums have not entirely clear this decision.

Google response was swift and a company representative explained further that the presence of an electronic stabilizer does not affect the quality of the images or videos. In the words of Google, optical stabilizers are good to minimize tremors to take photos in low light, but the EIS work best in recording videos.

OIS systems have advantages, but also inconvenient. One of them is the size to be a piece of hardware Google says that, having integrated, your Pixel would not be so fine (that are not so much, especially at the top). In addition, ensure that the OIS generate motion blur and for this reason they are not suitable for video recording.

As for the images in low light conditions, according to Google algorithm of the Pixel with the HDR + system camera gets better results than most terminals with OIS, so his absence is not a problem.

Videos 4K with stabilization

Google also had something to say with regard to the recording of videos and stabilization. Just like the Nexus 6 p last year, the new Pixel also allow you to record videos in 4K resolution, but the previous model was not able to take advantage of the stabilizer when recording at full resolution.

Google has taken advantage of the doubts generated by the absence of the optical stabilizer to confirm that the Pixel and Pixel XL Yes allow the recording 4K videos with image stabilization.
